Hello!! I am the DL this week. Here are my questions. Please try to answer the quetions in your own words.

How can teachers improve all student's proficiency through interactional modifications?

    Step1: Show that linguistic adjustments promote comprehension of input.
    Step2: Show that comprehensible input promotes acquisition.
    Step3: Deduce that linguistic adjustments promote acquisition.

    While students are solving communication problems, they use repetitions, confirmation checks or clarification request.

    The learners who had engaged in interaction progressed one stage in second language question formation, while the non-interactors failed to do so.


    Discussion Question
    I think that group work or pair work is the good way to help students’ proficiencies go up. During the work, students can help themselves. Also, for their proficiency, the complexity of T’ talk or challengeable tasks are also important. Through trying to understand or solve the tasks, students would be able to broaden their language.

  2. This week, I am the summarizer.

    In second language acquisition, input is very important for learners. Even though input is too complicated or difficult for students, students’ systematic approaches are very useful way to broaden their language proficiency. While they are interacting with others, either with native or non-native, they improve their language by using variety of skills for interacting such as repetition or asking clarification. It’s called Lontg’s ‘interaction hypothesis.’ Through interacting, specifically, trying to understand or solving difficult problem, learners also improve their second language.

    In order to solve ongoing communication difficulties, the native speaker- non-native speaker pairs were much more likely to make use of conversational tactics such as repetitions, confirmation checks, comprehension checks or clarification requests.

    Mckay's study provides some of the clearest evidence available that ' taking part in interaction can facilitate second language development', that is, in support of Long's Step 3.

    Collaborative efforts should be very useful for language learning and Interactional adjustments are more effective in promoting comprehension of input than are liguistic adjustments alone. In that points, giving more chance to learn through P/W and G/W is important.

    - Modified Interaction is the various modifications that native speakers and other converstioners create in order to make their input comprehensible to learners.

    - Modified interaction involves linguistic simplifications and conversational modifications.

    -Research has demonstrated that conversational adjustments can aid comprehension in the L2.

    -"Negotiating for meaning” is seen as the opportunity for language development.

    3. The learners wh had egaged in interaction progressed one stage(or more) stages in second languate question formation, while the non-interactors failed to do so.

    Discussion: Ss who run L2 needs someone to correct their interlanguage. But with a wrong knowledge, Ss can nave deep errors which can't be corrected easily, so with interaction (with natives or same Ss) Ss can acquire and mimic their conversation and apply to other situation.
