Sorry I'm late..
Here are my C.Q and D.Q.
1. What are the key ideas of socio-cultural theory?
2. What is the Zone of Proximal Development?
3. What functions do scaffolded help have? (p.145)
D.Q
How can we apply socio-cultural theory to second language learning?
To sum up;
ReplyDeleteThere are 5 aspects of “Socio-cultural Theory’. The first thing is ‘Mediation and mediated learning’. It is the central concept of sociocutural theory which means that higher forms of human mental activity are mediated. Also, it shows language is a tool of thought and a means of mediation in mental activity. Second aspect of that is scaffolding and the Zone of Proximal Development. It means that successful learning involves a shift from collaborative inter-mental activity to autonomous intra-mental activity and this is known as scaffolding. The other side of second aspect is Zone of Proximal Development. It can achieve the desired outcome given relevant scaffolding help. Third one is ‘Microgenesis’. This is contextualized learing process. The forth one is ‘private and inner speech’. Finally the last one is ‘Activity Theory’.
Answers for 3 Questions;
1. There are 5 ideas on Socio Cultural Theory such as mediation and mediated learning, scaffolding and the zone of proximal development, microgenesis, private and inner speech and activity theory.
2. The domain of knowledge or skill where the learner is not yet capable of independent functioning, but can achieve the desired outcome given relevant scaffolding help.
3. Successful learning involves a shift from collaborative inter-mental activity to autonomous intra-mental activity. And it is known as acaffolding.
Answers for Discussion Question;
We should consider a selection of second language research studies such as private speech, activity theory and scaffolding and the Zone of Proximal Development in language learning because from this collaborative activity, language itself develops as a ‘tool’ for making meaning.
1. What are the key ideas of socio-cultural theory?
ReplyDelete1) Mediation and mediated learning
2) Regulation, scaffolding and the Aone of Proximal Development
3) Microgenesis
4) Pricate and inner speech
5) Activity theory
2. What is the Zone of Proximal Development?
It is the domain of knowledge or skill where the learner is not yet capable of independent functioning, but can achieve the desired outcome given relevant scaffolded help.
3. What functions do scaffolded help have? (p.145)
1) recruiting interest in the task
2) simplifying the task
3) maintaining pursuit of the goal
4) marking critical features and discrepancies between what has been produced, and the ideal solution
5) controlling frustration during problem solving
6) demonstrating an idealized version of the act to be performed.
D.Q
How can we apply socio-cultural theory to second language learning?
From a socio-cultural perspective, children's early language learning arises from processes of meaning-making in collaborative activity with other members of a given culture. From this collaborative activity, language itself develops as a 'tool' for making meaning. And each concepts links processes of learners' development.
As a highlighter
* mediation : action to talk to two separate people or groups involved in a disagreement to try to help them to agree or find a solution to their problems.
* artifact : an object that is made by a person, such as a tool or a decoration, expecially one that is of historical interest
* scaffolding : a structure of metal poles and wooden boards put against a building for workers to stand on when they want to reach the higher parts of the cuilding
* proximal : near to the centre of the body or to the point of attachment of a bone or muscle
* microgenesis : contextualized learning process, central to socio-cultural accounts of SLL(Second language learning theories)
* inner speech : a use of language to regulate internal thought
* appropriation : the act of taking something for your own use, usually without permission
