  2. Q1. How Hymes mentioned about communicative competence?
Communicative Competence is how well you can convey and translate the message and interact with other in specific context.

Q2. CALP focuses on what? what about BICS? what is the biggest difference between them?
CALP(Cognitive/Academic Language Proficieny) focuses on form such as classroom exercises or tests. It is school-oriented language which is context-reduced. BICS(Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills) focuses on function in daily interaction. It is face-to-face communication which is context-embedded.

Q3. What are the differences between Grammatical competence &Sociolinguistic competence?
Both of them are components of communicative competence. But there are some differences. Grammatical competence is knowledge of rules of morphology, syntax, sentence-grammar semantics. If someone has good grammatical competence, he knows about linguistic code of language. In contrast, sociolinguistic competence is the ability of understand about social context where language is used. Those who has good sociolinguistic competence can comprehend what the participants are doing, what they are talking about, and what function of interaction is.

Discussion Topic. As a teacher, why is it important to understand IL? Explain why IL happens to L2 learners, and show some related examples.

I think it is important for teacher to understand characteristics of IL such as systematic, dynamic, variable and reduced system. Because the teacher can understand how her student develop and deal with it. students who has mastered using copula, auxiliaries and main verbs can sometimes make mistakes in speaking auxiliaries. Because the system of rules in her minds changes frequently. Teacher can accept the student’s mistakes and help her improve it. That’s why teacher should understand IL when they teach the language.

    Summary

Communicative Competence is the ability to exchange the message and interact with other in specific context. It has four different components which are grammatical, discourse, sociolinguistic and strategic competence, Grammatical competence is knowledge of lexical items. Discourse competence is ability to connect sentences in discourse and to make a meaningful saying, Sociolinguistic competence is ability to understand the social context. Strategic competence is ability to cope with imperfect knowledge and keep communication through hesitation, paraphrase and repetition. Interlanguage(IL) is the intermediate states or grammars between first learner’s language and second learner’s language. IL has four characteristics which are systematic, dynamic, variable and reduced system. Systematic is that IL is controlled by rules which consist of internal grammar. Dynamic is the rules in the learners’ mind change frequently. Variable is that IL shows different patterns in different contexts. Reduced system is less complex grammatical structures that typically occur in al IL than the target language.

BICS stands for basic interpersonal communicative skill that focuses on ability of communicate with people with interpersonal exchanges. The difference between them is how leaners acquired language skill through.

Q3. What are the differences between Grammatical competence & Sociolinguistic competence?

Both are component of communicative competence. There are differences between both of them. Grammatical competence is based on knowledge of lexical items and grammatical rules that the aspect of accuracy in language is more focused. However, sociolinguistic competence is based on understanding the sociocultural rules of language and discourse. It focuses on sharing information and ideas also, how they interact with others in socio context.

As a teacher, why is it important to understand IL? Explain why IL happens to L2 learners, and show some related examples.
As a teacher, IL is an instrument of analysis students. Understanding of the students’ acquisition of language skill is important. For example student use copular without errors but the student has trouble to use auxiliaries and main verbs. Teacher is notified what stage the student deal with. Then the teacher can predict the student would mistakes and stay focus on what they need to improve.

    Applier:
Communicative competence can be an indicator that can tell what kind of teaching style you have. If you want to teach students to share their ideas with foreigners, then you would focus on BICS, sociolinguistic competence and strategic competence. Also, you can apply communicative competence for well-balanced teaching plans.

For interlanguage, as I mentioned in discussion topic. Teachers may use this theory to understand or support students to assist the students improve their language skill easier.

    * Explain why IL happens to L2 learners, and show some related examples.
Everyone who learns second language has interlanguage because it is natural development to be a creative process. Here is an example. One of language learners makes a mistake when he says main verbs of third person singular morphemes because his first language does not have it.

    * Cognitive/academic language proficiency (CALP): linguistic proficiency of language learners such as listening, speaking, reading and writing.
    * Basic interpersonal communicative skills (BICS): skills that are needed to interact socially with other people.
    * Discourse: language beyond the sentence.
    * Grammatical competence : linguistic competence
    * Discourse competence: competence to form a meaningful whole
    * Sociolinguistic competence : knowledge of the sociocultural rules of language and of discourse
